A friend of my roommate's gave me her 65 gallon tank today. It had two damsels and a chocolate chip star in it. I just measured the salinity and it was 1.038! I'm amazed that they could live through that (more the star than the damsels). I can't imagine what the nitrates are.

If the specific gravity slowly increased, and it did, then it doesn't surpise me. Many inverts are more tolerant of this on the high range than on the low.
It is important that you don't immediately lower the specific gravity. It will have to be done quite slowly at this point.
