explain this one to me... Im sure lots of people would love to hear this one... if im reading that right so no need to buy different bulbs, just colored lenses eh ?

i guess you didnt read supers later post.
you cant use just any lense, you have to use a uv sterilizer LENSE.

that is a new one
not only would it filter out the other desired spectrums of light and maybe color the white, but would also drastically reduce the intensity creating a neeed to add 100x as much, merely to compensate
IMO, it would be much better to add the color spectrum desired, then to remove teh others
let's not forget we need intensity and spectrum, not just color appearance

um...lol.......you cannot use UV sterilizer lenses, they are made for UV systems and they are not a lense at all but accual light bulbs filled with mercury (or coated) not sure which...
and if you could use a UV lense on your lights it would make it so intense that it would kill every piece of living bacteria in your system.....think about it.....a normal UV serilizer is what 13watts? how about a 600watt UV sterilizer hehehe......Cmon bro please think before you post, i'm not trying to flame you, but please dont give any advice unless you know what you're talking about...
also on a side note......
those of you with large FW plant tanks, those metal halides at Home Depot will work just fine......even better, find yourself some mercury vapor street lamps.....heh

Elvis has struck again LOL PLEASE Newbies, resist the temptation to listen to the advice given by this lad! Without even getting into the science of the light spectrum, let's just keep it REAL simple ... with the thousands of reef-keepers out there do you REALLY think that something as simple as taking a HD light and putting a lense in front of it would be ignored? LOL My God, there are hundreds of posts on various forums about the Southdown sand issue and lighting probably has a 10 to 1 posting ratio to sand. There are scientists on these boards that will present lengthy papers on the best spectrum of light for our reefs, I will absolutely, positively promise you all that if we could use a HD fixture with lenses for 125 bucks to achieve the same lighting of a 10K bulb we would have heard about it from a source that would have some degree of credibility.
Here I sit at 49 remembering how much more I too knew when I was only a lad of 16!
Later,
Paul

No. They are the wrong color spectrum. I believe these are like 4000k bulbs if even that. If that was the case Id be out buying them. Thats why MH bulbs are so expensive because of the color spectrum they give off.

Man...I tried to leave this one with my last post explaining that lenses won't do the trick, but I just can't. I thought this post was dead, but apparently it has been resurrected. This is just too funny. ROFLMAO!!!!!

thanks to slothy's grins, decided to carry this on to the next level ... okay my hood is 2 ft x 6 ft, I figure that I can fit *at least* 108 of the porceline light bulb holders in there @ 16 square inches each. Purchased in "contractor's" pack of 24 @ $18.00 this means I can get all of them for about $81. Now if I get 250 watt "lamp" bulbs @ $1.00 each that's another $108.00. Add the cost of some lamp filters @ 50 cents each, another $54. What does this mean? Well for only $243 dollars I a can put ... are you ready for this? 27,000 WATTS of light in the tank !!!!!! All I can say is that FPL better put some more generator's online right away  wooooooooooo hoooooooooooo stand back NASA, my front yard is gonna look like the Cape on launch nights!
LOL just had to do it ... sorry,

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Oh man...that is too much!
Of course, you may flash boil the tank! And if not, prepare to do 70% daily top offs due to evaporation.
But wait! You'll have to figure out a way to bring your 1200 degree tank down to a comfortable temp. Hmm...problems problems...
And the algae outbreak would be record setting!
heh heh!
:D
