that is not the same. there is a special process that activated carbon undergoes.
yes burning some wood would give you carbon and it will have some filtering abilities but not nearly as effective as an activated carbon.
Google "activated carbon" and read up on the process of making it, intersting stuff...

I was watching some videos from "**************" on you tube last night -- just search their videos.
Anyways.. they did demonstrations on various types of carbon and how it cleared or didn't clear the water it was pretty amazing. Then they doubled the dose in the best of the carbon and it cleared that away while most "on the shelf" barely touched it after 12 hours.
There is definately a difference in even product on the shelf, not just home made carbon. Definately worth watching for anyone using carbon IMO.
Also if you buy it in bulk it is MUCH cheaper than buying more than 2 cans of it in the store.

A friend went out to do maintenance on someone's tank... fish were always dying. Found BBQ briquets in the sump O.O

Carbon isn't from burnt wood. The wood, coconut shells, whatever, is heated to a high temperature in the absence of oxygen. I don't know how you could do that at home.
