homemade ecosystem?

From all my research, its seems the only factor that can't be replicated is the mircle mud...... Has anyone out there ever made an ecosystem rather than buying the whole setup??????

this wont help much.. there is a thread i read today, its about refugium. Some dutch guy has a web page, and it shows step by step how to make one. I just read the thread today... try www.reefcentral.com they have a message board like this one (not as good though)
basically he used a plastic aquarium, put a bulkhead in the side, put live rock and sand in it and put it above his sump.

My LFS claims he has the same mud, he buys it from the same people.

Ocean jumper is the guys board name. he has a good site that show step by step how he made his refugium. post a message asking for him, and maybe he can link you his site. hope that helps.
