I think they're scared to loan money due to all the bad loans/foreclosures.
Could be.

That's about $500 per sqft. When my family first moved to Hawaii they paid $700k for a 1000sqft home. That's $700 per sqft.

Yeah, CA real estate prices are beyond practical. Then again it's CA everything is excessive. A 900K town home just isnt practical in our area.
for that price you could by several nice properties.
Hell our garage and front yard are that big and we dont have traffic, taxes or earthquakes to contend with.

Yep.

I only need insurance to cover the $200,000 it would take to completely replace a total loss.
The rest of the $$$ pays for a piece of land where the avg annual temp is 71 degrees and it rarely rains for 9 months out of the year. Humidity is considered to be unbearable at 40%.(people here are spoiled) It rained a couple days ago. It had been months since our last rain. We can drive with the top down almost any day we like. (we keep sunscreen in the convertible at all times)
That is why we (and millions more) are willing to pay so much for a house here. It doesn't take long to get used to.

Have lived here in Coronado for 2 yrs. Besides the traffic, gas prices, taxes, overcrowding, heat waves, cost of living, occasional earth quakes and lack of parking it's not bad.

You live in/on Coronado??
Your location says NV.

Yes, I work down here but my family lives in CO and NV so I consider them my home. I drive across that bridge almost daily. I do enjoy the great weather here and the ocean view. Hey socal57che how do you like this avatar?

Not yet. I work in PB, but long hours so I don't have time on work days.
Do you use Scripps water?
I'm going to switch. You can't beat free saltwater.

Just found a local reef club. (sdreefs) Can't believe I missed out all this time. If you haven't been over to the tidepools at Cabrillo, it's well worth the $15 annual fee.
