Setting up a 168 gallon (48x30x28) dt installing 89g(45x28x16) sump. Going to flow side to side with deep sandbed, macro, skimmer and frag section.anyone try this before or have any links to sites with info. thanks for any info.

sorry its against the board to link to other sites!!
as long as the sump is slightly lower than the DT youll be alright going exact horizontal can cause major problems because youll have to pump both ways one goes out or anything you flood the other.
if the sum is sligtly lower then you have gravity to go down and a pump to go up and it will work great.

yes I have one like that its called a show refugium. but like mike said youll need to have your fuge slightly lower than your tank or a sump. I have both so it works good

sump is 2 feet below dt but because of limited space and challenge to do something new to me am going to make water flow side to side instead of vertical

isnt the idea of all sumps to move water from one end to the other past filtration media and back into the dt.In the channels created by the baffles there will be live sand, live rock, macro, carbon, sponge.the first chamber is filled with live rock and flows over baffle working like conventional sump then it starts flowing side to side

with the tank being so wide and the limited stand hieght 28in to get in the front door(I am guessing as i bought tank and stand used.set up used 2 hang ons and a canister before)not much room left to work on lighting if put standard 18in or 20in sump want more room between sump top and stand top to work in sump for maintenance. Also never heard that about chaeto before Ill have to do more research into that one but might try mangroves. Also have read that chaeto doesnt like high light conditions so thinking it might not be to good with the metal halide lighting.light is needed for 12in clam being used as part of filter

I think your way over thinking this. You'll be blowing sand around with that design. No way to sustain a SB there. You can do one just like the pick that was posted and you'll get proper flow. You can add floss media between the baflles. You could if you wanted do two compartments where the fuge conpartment is shown, 1 for a refugium one for frags. However, you'll be better off IMO to do a seperate frag tank and let that be one large refugium.
