Today my fiance and I were out all day shopping and running errands, and when we came home, all of our fish in our tank were dead. Our 3 year old heater must have malfunctioned and the water was beyond HOT!. I am so sad and beside myself. We lost our 3 year old foxface, a 4 year old damsel and a 2 year old clown fish. Not to mention our pencil urchin and all of our turbo snails. Some of our hermit crabs survived but that is it. I am just soo sad. We don't know if we have it in us to start over again in our tank. :/ I just needed to vent! make sure you guys check your tank heaters often. I would hate to see this happen to someone else :( :(

Hang in there, vent if you need too, and if you love it, stick with it, it happens, it's nothing you did wrong.

So sorry! I know how you feel, I had a tank crash a few years ago. I was heartbroken and sure I would just go to fresh and drop some Angelfish in there. After a couple of days, I decided I couldn't give up the saltwater!

Sorry to hear it. This happens more often than we think. I always try to use two heaters, each about 1/2 the wattage needed. That doesn't completely solve the problem, but slows down the heating. A temp/alarm also gives some extra peace of mind.

Had the same thing happen to me as well, twice. Lost a tank full of captive-raised filefish, and then lost 2 really rare Butterflies.

yes sorry to hear. your right, I think 9 out of 10 crashes from established tanks go down from this very reason.

What else can we do to keep temps stable???

I am beginning to hate heaters. Mine broke and electrocuted my tank. 9 out of 10 overheat and kill everything!!!

My chiller would counter act any heat output that my heater could possilbly produce before I could catch it.

Do you have a reefclub in your area? I'm sure they'd be happy to help you start back up again. I'm sorry for you lost but...when life gets you down you just have to keep on swimmin'. =(
