Hose clamp question

I am using stainless steel hose clamps. My question is, is it safe if they become submerged or will they leach bad things into the water? Thanks

My opinion is that if it is close enough to become submerged anyway then the salt will get to it and it will get eaten by the salt. from there it can get into your tank as the salt falls off of it, this will intoduce metals into your tank that are better left out of it.
Is there anyway that you can change your configuration to get that clamp out of there? or don't you think it is a danger?

Well I was hoping that since it was stainless steel it wouldn't corrod. The clamps were advertised at marine clamps for use on boats and alike. I would prefer to put plastic clamps on, but I don't have any and would have to order them. I probably still will go with plastic just to be on the safe side.

I suggest you look up the thread "Razor blade in tank" look for the postings by fulcrum. He would have a better idea than I would on this.
If you can't find the post let me know

I had some stainless steel ones near my sump that corroded just from the salt evaporation. DIdnt have any problems with the water quality, however you might want to get some plastic zip ties. depending on how tight you need the seal, that might be all you need.

plastic all the way. it is all i use any more. a pain to remove once on, but they are 100% water and salt safe.
when you order them, order 2 or 3 of each size, so that you will not need to order thema gain in the future. the shipping is the most expensive part.

Interesting.
My understanding is that stainless steel is non-corrosive. I have a stainless steel rod I use as a ground probe and have been for many years, and there is no corrosion on it.

It's probably as BigMac says, there are different qualities of stainless steel. Considering how cheap the hose clamps are, it's probably not that high of quality of stainless.

Thanks for the nod Thomas712,
With regards to stainless, you can submerge a hose clamp, and it will likely do its job for many years.
I bought my 92 reef used, and the guy who owned it before me used stainless hose clamps on everything in the sump. They were rusted, but still functional and intact. He had the tank set up for years, and had great success in reef keeping.
My judgement on placing stainless under water in your tank is this: It probably won't dissociate any iron, chromium or nickel into your tank, but why risk it. If the connection is underwater, you can usally just ase a tight fitting and it will hold together. It may leak a very tiny amount, but so what?...its underwater!
If its above the water line, it will likely get corroded in the salt rich air. It will remain functional for YEARS though.
