Whats a good salinity level for a hospital tank and how long should I leave a fish in there without stressing him out from thew lower salinity level?

A hospital tank used to treat sick that have been removed from your display tank should have the exact water parameters, including salinity, as the display. If you want to treat the fish with hyposalinity, then you add the fish, again, to salinity that is within normal levels, then, gradually, over 48hrs, reduce the salinity to 1.009.
Fish should not be taken from one salinity condition and suddenly placed into another with a lower or higher salinity. This is very stressful. FW dips is the only situation where this is done, and it is only used for a few minitures of treatment.
Are you have a specific problem?

Thanks much Beth - I just learned something. I had clowns that seemed stressed for some reason and thought I better get a hosp tank maybe. They seem fine now though. Does your procedure apply to fish with ick? I thought you just put them in there for a day with a much lower salinity and the ich dies off. I had no idea the params should be the same and then slowly lower the salinity level.
thanks again...

Hyposalinity is a treatment for ich and is used by some as an overall preventative mention when QTing fish. It is a procedure that takes a month, so its not a quick fix. Under no circumstances should fish be taken from one SG and placed in another for long term. Maintaining stable conditions is very important to fish health.
