HOT HOT HOT! Tank Temp

Hi everyone - me again- another question.......
My tank temp is hovering between 82-84 degrees! How bad is that? I have gotten many different opinions on this and I don't know what is correct. I have 2 different types of thermometers so I know the temp reading is correct. I had 2 powerheads in the bottom of the tank which I shut off. That dropped the temp a couple of degrees. Not sure what else could be causing it. Is it unsafe?
(150 gallon tank)

i really can't imagine the powerheads doing that much to the temperature.....if anything if the room temperature is cooler then what the tank is, then put the powerheads towards the top kind of pointed towards the surface enough to ripple the water and hopefully the outside air will help bring the temperature down some......but it's not a high enough temperature to kill anything......higher then what i'd keep a FOWLR tank at though.....IMO

What kind of lights do you have, and how long do you run them?
try shortening the amount of time they are on, if they are on a long time or adding a small fan that will blow on the suface of the water.
Or air condition the room and drop temp to 72 in the room.
Just some idea's.

I just got a new light set up yesterday. Sorry but I don't know the exact name of it but it is the kind of light system that has 3 different kinds of light. Daylight moonlight and some kind of blue lighting. (my husband knows more of the names and terminology than I) Anyway the new lighting system is up on legs instead of sitting right on the tank so maybe that will help. My main issue is I don't want to have to buy a chiller. That seems like a big expense and I also don't want to kill any of the fish either. Our house is airconditioned so it is always kept cool.

No sunlight on the tank. There is a window nearby but I keep the blinds closed. We are in Seattle so it is not hot here. I am going to the lfs tonight and will check into a fan. Also should I uncover the top of the tank completely? Will that help release heat from the water? Sorry if these are really dumb questions. I am new to this and trying really hard not to kill anything! :scared:

Cools the tank through evaporation. Just point the small fan at the surface of the water, and keep an eye on the water level. Every couple days you'll have to add a gallon or two of top off water to keep enough in the tank.
