Renogaw, how big is your tank, and how much rock do you have. I imagine pods will distribute like everything else. if you have a bigger tank with more rock they will be more dispersed. look in your tank after the lights go out....thats when I notice mine more. Because even though they may be more dispersed, I too would have expected to notice something.
Also, I am aware that pretty much all fish eat pods. but they do so in different amounts. I mean my barbershop goby will eat more of the food I fead him and less pods than my 6line. also the amount of fish I have should factor into the equation. The fact that if I do get a mandarin (and I am speaking hypothetically because I dont have a sump, or all the LR I want yet) it will only be my 4th fish, he wont have a ton of competition for food during feeding time, and he wont have a lot of competition for pods. I am speaking of my situation and also KARENM. If she was willing to pack her tank with rock and add a fuge, she might be able to keep a mandarin. but i could see where the scooter would make it more difficult....its a tough call for me, but it would be a little more difficult for her.

i believe Renogaw meant in the bags from swf.com and not his tank.
as for the mandarin, i wouldn't put a mandarin in a tank smaller than 75 gallons and no less than 100lbs of lr. with a well established fuge and the tank being at least a year old.

On a bit of a sidenote, I had a red scooter blenny... And if you're worried about the price of pods and the inconvenience of keeping them, you can try some blood worms for the blenny... My little guy ate them right up.

yea, the pods i got were tiny from here, but a couple weeks later i do see a nice population in my fuge and my mandarin is constantly picking at my rock.

Well, Karen, when we started the hubby's 55 gallon tank, we added live rock with only standard lights. All was well. Of course after we bought compact fluorescent lights, we saw the difference. But if you start out with standard lights, it should be okay.
Don't be immediately distrustful of your lfs. Just come here and verify what they say with the other posters here.
And don't be too hard on yourself. Your 40 gal tank can have plenty of corals and maybe even an anemone one day. Just keep in mind that anemones grow and can grow big with proper care. But they can be hard to care for. Besides, you can't add them now anyway because your tank needs lots of time to mature. Since you are on a tight budget like me, you don't want to become impatient. Take your time and enjoy every new item you add, whether it is a fish or equipment..
Most of all...Have fun! We find this hobby to be very enjoyable if sometimes daunting!
