How about some health standards!

I am new to this hobby and forum. A recurring theme I’ve come across here is the need for a QT for introducing new fish as well as treatment of illness. I’ve also noticed that when someone posts here with a problem they are jumped on if they failed to QT new fish. My question is why don’t we hold the LFS more accountable for selling diseased fish? My LFS sold me a Tomato Clown that despite the QT and my attempt at treatment was covered in spots within 2 days of my purchase and died 5 days later. They offered no assistance except for the opportunity for me to spend more money on medication. Is it not their moral responsibility to sell healthy animals? I know there are reputable dealers out there, I just think that if a standard existed in the industry, we’d have less needless fatalities. Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Most of the time stores just cannot afford, nor do they have the space, to keep all of the fish they get in quaranteen for a few weeks. Fish don't develop symptoms for at least a week or two and most only show signs of disease when they are stressed (like carrying them home in a small bag.
It really is easy for the hobbiest to have a $8.99 10 gallon tank for use as a hospital/quaranteen tank.
My quaranteen tank has a few Silver Mollies in it at all times to keep it cycled (there ya go BeasleBob). They are nice to watch and easy to keep. When I get a new fish (like my recent Pencil-Streaked Rabbitfish) I toss the Mollies into the display tank and the hospital is all set for the new fish.

No, is as common as the common cold is in humans. Anytime you have a bunches of fish comming in all the time there is going to be ich in the system. I have never seen a fish store that did not have ich in their tanks on and off....even the best stores with good practices have it. If they get 50 fish in at a time they usually do not have the space to quarenteen them. Most that I know of just use UV sterilizers and hope for the best. The fish stores near me have several large systems in their stores that link in the water supply and filtration to groups of tanks at a time. Preventing ich in these situations is like preventing a cold....near impossible......especially when all the fish comming in are already stressed from shipping and therefore more prone to disease.
