How are the ORA Screaming Green Birdsnest?

So a local reefer is selling a nice frag of ORA Screaming Green Birdsnest
(Seriatopora guttatus) at a pretty good price. I had wanted to pick it up but in light of my recent Acro RTN incident I'm now having second thoughts. What are your opinions on this coral? Should I still get it or play it safe and not touch SPS corals for a while?

They're fairly hardy. That being said, what's your lighting? Do you did your SPS?

I have 2 colonies of ORA Green Birdsnest....I've never had a problem with either and they are a pretty fast grower.....now that said....RTN can happen to any SPS coral at any time. You can have a large colony in your system for years and it all of a sudden RTN. No one really knows why it happens. All you can do is cut off the pieces that have RTN'd and frag the pieces that are still healthy....sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't. Unfortunately RTN is a factor in keeping SPS and you will never know if it is going to happen. If I stopped buying SPS because of RTN I'd still have no pieces

I got a 4 bulb T-5 setup in 46gal. My first SPS, Acro RTN'd after just a few days of getting it.

Thank you again for the great advice! I'll probably pick up a piece. You know, my tank still smells after the Acro RTN'd. It's better but still smells pretty bad. Beside water changes, carbon, and skimmer, is there anything I can do? How long does it take for the stink to go away. The weird thing is at first, the tank STUNK REALLY BAD but now the tank is not that bad now but it's stinking up my house!

I don't know....that has never happened to me when I've had a coral RTN....and I've had my share lol.
Are you sure it's not something else causing it?

hmm... the water really doesn't smell bad right now but that's the only thing I can blame for the stink in my house. LoL! I looked all over and can't find another source. The tank smelled pretty bad the day RTN happened so I did a 10% water change, replaced carbon filter, and running my skimmer on overtime.

meowzer Do you have any Clown Gobies? I had a yellow clown goby kill a birds nest
Nope, no clown gobies. sorry to hear about your birdsnest.

That is really strange....I don't know what to say about the smell of the water.

i dont think ur tank is ready. u hv 20 reading in nitrate. for a fowlr or basic reef, thats ok. but for sps, its stressful. why r u running a hob filter? run a skimmer instead. also, i feel more rocks for u is better.

I agree with the HOB, skimmer and amount of rock....but the Nitrates at 20 don't concern me as much. I have SPS with great color and growth and my trates are consistently between 15-40.

its possible to keep sps with nitrate (0-20) for sure, assuming everything else is in order. i think in his/her case, too many other factors such as newless of tank and not having a skimmer.

was the acro that bleached ora? i found ora corals r much hardier and easier to adapt than wild corals. i could be wrong obviously with the birdsnest. but bridsnest isnt that easier sps to start with if u r new sps. try ora monticap instead.

I do not buy wild colonies anymore for that reason....I only buy frags. And a monti cap is a great hardy beginner coral!!

most likely no. i hv many caps throughout my reef, and only 1 somehow attached to a rock. the rest just sit on top of rocks.
