How big of a refugium does a 90g tank need?

IMHO use at least a 20 gallon for your fuge build, Ideally, a 30 would be good. But I think you would be better off to use plexi glass, and make a fuge that way. There is alot of info on here on that.

check out the "plumbing 101" thread. Squid has a fomula for figuring a fuge/ sump. that entire thread is worht the reading. I am going to use a 40 long for my 90, but this is still a work in progress.

I've always been told the bigger the better!! I have an 80 gallon tank and I started off with a 10 gallon fuge. I quickly outgrew it and decided to measure inside the stand and take it to my LFS and get the biggest tank that would fit under there. I ended up with a 30 gallon long. It fit perfectly!! I used plexiglass to make the copartments and now the tank is happy as a clam and I have algae growing like crazy in there. So IMO the bigger the better!!

I went off of the bigger the better idea. I have no wall behind my 90 gallon. Its between rooms in the basement. So I was able to place a 55 gallon tank behind it and make that into a refugium. It sit's just a few inches below the 90 so I could just gravity feed and gravity return to the sump under the 90 gallon. So far after about 10 months being setup it has gone a long way in stablizing my system and has been a great natural filter, as well as home for pods, worms and other critters. With a DSB and chaetomorpha macro algea its been one of the best things I've ever done to my tank.
