how big of a refugium

I have a 75 gallon DT and currently have a 38 gallon tall tank that measures 36 X 12.5 X 17 working as my refugium. The current 38 is starting to leak from the bottom and i need to replace it, there is not a ton of space in the bottom of the stand for something much bigger. My question is what is a good size tank to get to use as a refugium, can I get a smaller tank or do i still need something close to the 38???

if you have tons of room why go smaller ? get the biggest size tank you can afford and fit under your stand. Remember at the very least the more volume you add to your system the better off you are

If it were me I would put a 55 under there if you can. Have plenty of room for a nice refugium and a compartment for skimmer and return pumps. That would be a great setup.

with the lights on top of the 38 .. there isn't really that much room to go with a taller tank, unless i get different lighting ... what lighting would be sufficient for caulerpa, that would be smaller so i could get a taller tank??

just about 24" top to bottom, but that is tight so i would need to leave space to move the lights in and out and get into the refugium for whatever reasons.
