How can I tell if my CC Star is healthy?

My Chocolate Chip Star is very inactive, and I am wondering if he is ill or something? He is very inactive, especially over the last week or so. He has never been one to cruise all over the tank, but he would generally respond if I gently moved him with the tongs or gave him some food. Yesterday when I fed him some squid, I slipped it under one arm like I usually did, and watched him for about 15 minutes, and no tube feet emerged. A couple of hours later I checked on him and he had some tube feet out on a couple legs but had not eaten the squid. I am worried about him! Any ideas? I am due for a water change this week - could declining water quality cause a CC Star to act this way?
Still very new to this - advice welcome. I will check my water tonight.

Hello sooz.
Once you get your parameters list them for us to have a look see. A few questions I would have is;
1.How long have you had him?
2.Is his body mass firm looking, or does it look mushy?
3.How old is your tank?

Sorry to say this, but it's pretty much a slow death as they starve......You should only keep sea stars in a VERY established tank and only afteryou have a lot of experience...

IMO, of all the stars, the chocolate chip star is one of the best because they can be spot fed and rarely, IMO will starve.
However, a mature tank with pristine water quality is imperative. Please post all of your readings ASAP.

My fish guy came today, changed the water, and put in phosphate remover. He blames declining water quality for the starfish's inactivity, gave him a lookover, and said he looks stressed but not sick. Overall he says my tank looks great - well maintained & healthy. I have had the tank 5 weeks today, but it was not a new setup - I inherited it from someone who was tired of "messing with it."
newtankman - The CC star used to be in one of my Mom's tanks at work, so I have "known" him for a couple of years, but he has been in my tank for about a month. He does not look at all mushy - he looks (and feels) firm and solid. He has his legs turned up at the tips.

A specific gravity less than 1.025-1.026 is highly stressful on these animals, as are large water changes. I would be interested to know, since it was a tank that was moved, what the parameters are. I don't care about what the fish guy things, personally, and would not trust someone who has an economic interest in the tank without knowing more about what is going on. But that is me...

First of all, let me explain. I read all posts just trying to glean any little tidbit of info I can from this mass of information. I didn't come here expecting to be able to help specifically with your star as I don't have any real experience with them. I thought there was something to be learned.
But I did think of a few things while reading. If the fishguy is the one maintaining it I would dare say he would be quick to say it looks well maintained and healthy. Not to say it isn't, but, why would he tell on himself that he hasn't been doing a good job (if he hasn't).
I considered hireing someone to maintain my tank as I don't know a lot yet, but I *PERSONALLY* feel like I can only trust myself and if I am going to do this, I want to make sure I am doing it right. I personally wouldn't hire someone to maintain my tank now (after reading enough posts from people saying here and elsewhere how they are getting "screwed" by poor quality). What are this guy's credentials? Do you know for sure he knows what he is talking about? There is a lot of difference between knowing how to keep fish, inverts, and corals and what their needs are.
It could be he is taking good care of you, but I would suggest maybe you at least know how to do your own tests and water changes. This way you know that if something like this comes up in the future (or a anemone dies or something drastic) you can take care of at least the basics until someone can get there. A tank can crash fast if the right problem were to arise.
I am still learning / researching / and cycling my tiny QT before I even begin my DT, but these are just the suggestions / thoughts I came up with when I read your posts.
Ophiura is extremly knowlegeable about stars (and much more) so I also will suggest you keep a close eye on what (s)he asks and suggests. Good Luck to you and your star.

Thanks for your thoughts/suggestions. :) Below are my return thoughts:

Allow me to clarify - he was not complimenting himself - he was complimenting my care of the tank in the 5 weeks since he was last here. In otherwords, my care of it between cleanings. He said my tank looked better than 80% of the tanks he cleans/services.

I would like to take care of the tank all by myself, eventually, but due to time restraints have decided to let him do the water changes for a little while until I am comfortable. He has extensive experience with his own reef tanks and fowlr tanks and has been servicing my Mom's tank for a couple of years now. So far, when he disagrees with the LFS, he has turned out to be right. Today I told him all about this site, so it's possible he may show up here, and then he can defend himself if he wishes. But suffice it to say I did not pick him out of the phone book, and he maintains several successful tanks of his own.

I do test my own water, and I know how to do my own water changes, but would prefer not to, for the present. :) Since the tank is FOWLR and has very few inhabitants right now, I feel pretty confident to deal with a crisis.

Thanks. I appreciate everyone's advice and input.
By the way, the star is a little active this evening, more so than he has been in a week or so.

Yeah! I am so happy to read he is doing better.
I am sorry, I did not mean to insinuate anything foul. I really tried not to do that, but often things sound different in my head than they do to the person reading them. It is just that I had started looking into it myself and found the full gamut of people (mostly idiots who had kept FW and started a business cause they couldn't hold down a job at a LFS and claimed to know about SW), and of course don't know what your experience / availability is. We don't have much available here - unfortunately.
If he is that knowlegable - GREAT!
Ophuria might still be able to help you pinpoint what happened if you talk to them. That way it won't happen again.
Glad things are looking up for the guy
