I believe 8" is fine, that is were mine ended up. As long as the bulb doesn't get water on it, its fine. A drop or a splash is not enough for a explosion, not enough to cool the glass rapidly which causes the glass to contract.

i gotta say, if i was looking for information about very high temperature explosions and conflagurations, i would definately have to listen to someone named pyro.... :p

Hey Rye,
My 175's are 6 inches off the water. They have been that way for as long as I've had MH's on my tank. Like 6mts I think. You should be fine with them at this level as long as you don't have huge fish splashing water everywhere.

I would definataly cut some holes and add at least 1 fan. @ would be better. The temp in your canopy really depends on what kind of paint you used on the inside. But you really should have some type of air movement in there. My personal opinion is mount them in the top pulling air out. You may need to add a vent or something in the back.
