Everyone has an opinion on that one, also depends on the size of your tank. Me I like a shallow sand bed in the main tank. I have a 2 inch bed, but I also have about 4.5-5 inches in my 55 gallon refugium.

30G I would say 45 pounds of sand would be very nice. But you can get by with 30 pounds. I just like the look of the deeper sand bed.

This is a topic worth spending time researching before jumping into setting up, since once you setup the sandbed, you are pretty much stuck with it. As Thomas said, there are a lot of opinions and methods. Look for the way that best suits your needs.

Yeah. Detritus hides in sand. Use a sump and macro and you'll have no need of sand. It's always gets stuck in your bathing suit anyway. I got like a half inch and it's down to glass in one spot.

Well, if you wanna do some research on the DSB idea, htere is a really nice article by Dr. Ron Shimek. If you look hard enough I am sure you could find it.

I have a 4 inch deep sandbed. But there tends to be people that disagree about a sandbed that deep. I know they dsb lower nitrates but some say toxic gas builds up. But isn't that really rare?

Depends on lots of things:
1)What you consider toxic
2)if the water you put in the tank has lots of heavy metals
But it doesn't matter that much if the sand bed builds up these areas because for them to form they need to be in areas with very little disturbances (granted some disturbance IS needed, but this is done by the micro/macro organisms inhabiting the sand bed).
this means that unless you go stirring up your sandbed (which unfortunately many people do) these areas will remain undisturbed.

Why are you stuck with the sand bed once it is set up? You can't take some out to start up a new tank? Or add to it?
