They just need an area that is cover. You can do whatever.

If you make a rock pile, the eel will more than likely find all the nooks and crannys to go in and out of. As long as their is enouh space for him to be completely covered he should be happy.

I've never kept a goldentail, but I doubt if they would bite.
I have a moonlight on my 240, and it doesn't seem to bother my puffers, or my SFE.

my eels rarely go up off the substrate unless theyre hungry or its feeding time. that being said, make a lower structure that covers a lot of the tank, that way they have ample space to move all across the tank under cover. making large piles of rocks gives them a lot to play in, but make sure it's secure, as eels get larger they like to knock over rocks.

Eels like their rocks stacked so they can knock them over. Pretty easy to please, these eels!

y are you laughing. I figure once the eel is in there those rocks might as well be guled down cause thers no way i can change it once he's in there. I try to please my fish the best i can. I know they like caves. but didnt know if they like to swim through tunnels or tall strutures.
hows this look

I think what polar means is eels don't really care how you like to aquascape. Even the smaller ones are really strong and can topple big rocks when food hits the water. Just let them do their thing.

Honestly, they like a cave rock, by means it has holes in it or threw it, they like hidding at the bottom of the rocks or in them and come out to eat.
But I couldn't say much because my Friends EEL committed suicide just yesterday..
It jumped out of the tank.
His' cover is a little broken, but im still not sure how, out of the entire cover there is prob a hole about 2 inches big, did it jump around all night till it found the hole, what a committed Snowflake EEL, lol, committed alright, suicide that is.
You guys never try that ok....
your life is far to special and important,
you are here for a reason..
Ohh well, he told me he woke up, and saw it on the floor. ahahah lol
peace

marlins,
sorry about your eel.
OK, I'll explain:
I'm laughing because no matter how you structure your rocks, your eels will topple the rocks. Then you'll re-stack your rocks, and your eels will topple them again...and again...and again.
Unless you glue 'em, they're coming down!
Eels like to topple the rocks. :D

my sfe loves caves. as far as your pic i thing that you need something in there for him to hide in. unless any of those rocks have a opening under them. unless you go with a snake eel. they burrrow in the sand. its really cool.

Out of the 3 eels that I've had, none of them really toppled much of the LR over. I laid a pretty good base with large peices. To big for them to move. Then I stacked some smaller peices on top. Just make sure the rockwork is sturdy. Goldentails don't get real big, so I don't think they'll be able to move the LR that much.
The only thing that I can say about the LR in the pic is to make sure there are places where the eel can burrow under the base of the LR. I have a couple of peices in my tank that have a base radius of 12+", and the eel prefers to stay under these peices most of the time.

If you leave some sand under the LR the eel will burrow down to the glass. This could topple some of your rockwork. The peices that I laid down had an opening, and the eel is able to get underneath the LR. He dug all the sand out, and made a little home under the LR.
