How do Fighting Conchs work?

Just got a fighting conch to clean up my sandbed a bit. Saw some crazy looking eyes come out and what looked like a little snail arm come out and move some sand. What do conchs do? Do they suck like a snail or eat like a crab? Someone please enlighten me on conchs. I find them quite interesting...

ha, just watch him, you'll see. mine will bury himself in the sand for days at a time. the first time, i was sure he was a goner.
