I got a eeg crate and i'm a little confused on how i set it up on my tank. Do i take the glass top off, put the eegcrate on top, then put the glass top back on the tank?? How do i do this? :notsure:

um.. what is it that you are trying to do??? i mean.. most people use egg crete to either line the bottom of there tanks so that rocks and suck dont scratch the bottom soo much or so they can remove the glass top complety and have a open top tank so that light can be a lil more intense or for heat issue..

Leave the glass off. Placing a glass top over eggcrate defeats the purpose.. Be prepared for increased evaporation once the glass is off. The upside is increased gas exchange and as stated, improved light penetration.

just put the eggcrete in replacement of the glass top... make it as seald as possible... (even use duct tape in some places that the eel maye crawl out from... then use something with some weight and place on top of egg crete... (eels are friggin strong and can do some crazy Hudini stuff) but my question is.. if u have glass tops.. y even use egg crete?? i mean.. just use the reg tops and then duct tape the open holes up..

I've also used eggcrate for many things for my tank. I lined the bottom of my tank with it. Made a cover for my internal overflow / with hobby plastic to prevent jumping fish or nudibranches from getting in. Built a cover for the back of the tank for the same jumping fish reason. Use a piece of it when I scrape coralline algea to keep the clownfish from making food out of my fingers....etc...

Isnt using eggcrate to line the bottom of your tank just the same as using an UGF? I was told that using the UGF is bad for a SW tank. Wont all the detritus and uneaten food and anything else accumulate at the bottom of the eggcrate? How did you set up yours?

I used eggcrate for a long time until I made a custom top. The eggcrate isnt that visible from the front. Just cut it to fit on the lip of the tank. Also it isnt crazy to use eggcrate. It is so much better for your system to be open to the air, aka natural... Gas exchange, heat exchange, better light, less salt deposit. It is a good idea, although with the eel I am not sure that it is strong enough to put heavy stuff on eggcrate. I would stick with the glass or make a custom canopy. Just be sure to leave no holes. I have heard of people waking to find an eel halfway across their living room floor or worse yet a tail hanging out of their dogs mouth.... Just before it slips down the hatch...LOL.... Good luckk :hilarious :hilarious :hilarious :hilarious
