how do Shrooms attach?

I just got an order in from SWF (another great order that was perfect). In the order I picked up a couple of umbrella shrooms. The question is... one was attached to a shell (not a rock) and appears to be half on/half off the shell. I'de like to get rid of the shell and just have it attach to a rock. It appears that the base of the shroom looks alot like an anenome base which leads me to believe that if I put it near a rock it will just attach like an anenome does.
Is that true? Or do I need to settle with the shell being in there and glue the shell to a rock somewhere?

in the last six months, My Brother and I have had much success with fragging shrooms and richordias. We take an exacto knife, and cut it in half, cut the eye in half. then I take a small rubermaid/tupperware container, put a little sand in the bottom of it, and a small piece of live rock. Cut the center of the container lid out, and leave the outside rim. Take a net, and cut the screen off of it. make sure that the screen will fit over the top of the container pretty tight. put the frag on the rock, fill the container up with water, and put the screen on top of the container, and hold it down with the lid.(that has the center cut out of it.) set it in a spot in your tank with low flow, and good light. 3 days to a week later, you will have another mushroom attached to a rock. both halfs will live. I haven't had one die yet. we have done it more than 10 times. make sure that the frag stays on top of the piece of rock. I don't know if you are gonna try it, but it will work. and you can double up with your mushrooms. Just a suggestion. I immagine that if you cut the mushroom off or the shell carefully, and do the same thing, it will work just fine

I tried this with a 3-4" one and when i tried to cut it it shrunk to the size of a dime. Any ideas on how to do this better. Also when placing in the container they wont stay ont he rock but flip upside down!!! What am i doing wrong?

When i cut them they do shrink up. that is normal. It takes a little while to get them, buy i just keep flipping them over. I have had success with takeing 2 small pieces of rock and kinda putting the shroom on one of them and putting the other piece to kinda hold it in place. It is pretty agravating at times, but it works good.
