I didn't have the washer option. I used to throw them on the cement floor, get the hardest flow I could get going with the garden hose nozzle, and beat the heck out of them that way. After it I would soak in a bucket with a bit of bleach, then soak in a bucket/rinse with some water and dechlorinator and done. Always have at least one back up filter sock so that you have time to do all this, otherwise you have a tendancy to avoid changing the sock -->nitrate problem.
The hose and washer method should be fine, though residue from the detergent would scare me...but then I am easily scared. Not by bleach, but by other stuff

Bleach dries chemically clean so there is no ill affect on the fish...obviously dont throw the sock in the tank right after cleaning...i would let it dry a good 24hrs or so...but yah bleach is one of the best ways to clean them.

The owner of my lfs does the same.
We rinse the excess salt and debris off, then he takes them home and throws them in the wash with bleach.
He didn't used to rinse them first and his washer rusted and his wife almost had to kill him...

no sock in my system. no mechanical filtration at all. sump with cheato and algae scrubber. thats it. no skimmer. two return pumps create lots of flow and a wave maker.

Why bleach?? What does adding the bleach gain??
I take mine...throw them in my washer inside out, run the washer with hot water, take them out....and done.
