How do you clean a sand bed?

ok guys i'm about to move at the end of the month and just got some play sand yesterday. I'm going to put it in a rubbermaid container and take some cc out of the tank and put it in a stocking in the rubbermaid container with the sand. I will only do this to 1/3 of the sand. Will this help reduce any cycles? Anything i should do different?

I bought some of that black sand today it looks really good! Found it at my LFS for only .60 a lb
