I just use poly cotton filter because the sock will get worn out after awhile you can only clean it so much. Cotton is cheaper although it doesn't trap the small particles like a sock filter does, but good enough just buy them for cheap at fabric store hehehe...

I've just been rinsing it real well in the hottest water I can stand, even using a long handled scrub brush on the inside to help get the junk out. Then, squinshing it up and down in hot water until it looks pretty darn clean and the water runs clear as possible. Think old fashioined wash board. No chemicals, as I was thinking they might not be so good for the tank.

Insted of putting it in the hotest water you can stand you can wash it out really good then put some fresh water in a pot put your sock or what ever in the pot and boil it.

i used to just spray it with high pressure hose and that's it but most of the time to kill a algae i use bleach and let it dry... for a couple of day to let the bleach evaporate...
