Well, I'll leave that to the Big Time Pros...I'm anxious to hear their replies. I could not even imagine the cash it would take to set that thing up!!! Have you ever done this before? On a smaller scale?

FO, FOWLR< REEF OR AGGRESSIVE?
If no rock, then I would say add your sand, and a few bags of LS, tehn throw in about a 1/2 Lb of shrimp for a few days, the n start monitoring
If you willuse LR, then add your sand adn rock adn fill, then throw in jsut a couple of shrimp, to induce the spike and let-er ride.

fishy88,
A 1600 gallon tank is very large....the biggest I have personaly have witnessed, was a 250,000 gallon tank at the aquarium before we opened....we do 50,000 gallon water changes in this tank and in our other large tank too.
I dont think I would like to be there for your water changes, nore flipping the bill for the new salt or RO water for each water change, each week. I dont envy you too much there!

The same way you cycle a 10 gallon. The nitrogen cycle doesn't change because of the amount of water. You just need a little more waste product to get it started in order to handle the bioload that tank will sustain.

Toss in a few raw lobsters.
Just kidding.
I have no idea how to set up or take care of a 1600 gallon saltwater tank.
That's about 21 times larger than my largest tank.
I'm at a loss.

how do you cycle a 1600gal tank?
Throw a dead cat in there!?:p (Just joking of coarse)
Surely you would cycle it just like any other tank, but on a larger scale?

I'm with Sammy. The waste the first fish produces should be neglible in that size tank so as long as fish are added slowly, the nitrifying bacteria should keep up. Once that is done you'll be ready to add a manatee(they are so cool)

You have a proper load bearing spot for that tank? Your looking at a few tons not a few lbs..... You'd need inches thick glass too :) and some strong super glue....
Good luck with that. Would look great if you get it up.
