How do you get the ammonia down? Any advice. Mine are in between .25 -.50. ALSO, is 5.0 too high for nitrates?

Do a water change. Do not overfeed.
On your nitrates, you say the reading is 5.0.
I assume you mean 5ppm which is not a problem whatsoever.

thank you very much, but i forgot to mention the tank has only been running for a month. Is that a normal ammonia level for a tank that fresh? Also, when should I do my first water change?

Sounds like you're still cycling. Have you tested the water regularly? This may or may not be the ammonia spike that normally would occur. Hold off on any water change for the time being

Do you have any LR or livestock? You need something in the tank to create an ammonia spike in order for it to go down. Also, what kind of test kit are you using? Some may give false readings.

I think you basically answered your own question.......You need to do water changes to bring down your readings.....Has the tank completely cycled?
