How do you get your pictures so BIG???

I thought picture sizes can only be 500 x 500 or something like that. So how are some of these pictures nice and big, hook me up with the knowledge please.

pictures are supposed to be only 500x500...and if they are bigger usually they are asked to resize if noticed......otherwise...i dont know

we all use an outside photo hosting site that and link to it. It allows your pics to be much bigger i think since its not taking up this sites bandwidth. a good one to check out is fotki.com
but get someone else opinion because im not sure this is the reason i can post large pics

I use Photobucket.com. I have the same problem with the size and everything but now I just put the pictures on a slideshow and then put the link in the thread. If you do that then your pics will be bigger. Heres an example.
