How do you net (or not net) your fish?

I just posted a question to the Fish section about how to transfer a lionfish from one tank to another and got several responses. I'm sure this question has been asked before, but i haven't seen it .
How do you get your fish or inverts from one tank to another? Do you use a net? A scoop? A pasta strainer?
And the most important question...... Why?

Whenever I've caught a fish I've used a net....except for a porcupine puffer....i put the bag in and sorta engulfed him with the bag so he wouldn't blow up....
A caught a lion last week to bring back to the store cuz he was too boring in my tank....I used a net to get him and i was scared shitless of getting stung. I would go for him and miss and he would swim right for my arm everytime...I finally caught him with the net and plopped him in the bag.
For safety, I would recommend wearing some sort of gloves...thick gloves that his spines won't get through. I would have but the store closed in 20 minutes and I was in a hurry to get him back.
