I have these palys on this hermit shell I would like to get off and attach to a rock. I'm afraid to tear it up though. I have trying to talk the hermit out of the shell, but he ain't having it.

Use a razor blade to get the palys off, then dry the bottom of them and dry the spot of rock you want to apply them to and glue them on with super glue.

Do you "cut" them off or pry them up with the blade?

You know if you wedge the shell where the hermet can't move it around and put another very similar shell next to it, the hermit will eventually switch shells.

I have the exact same crab and palys in my tank and I just leave it. Now if it was a nice ric or something, I would whack it off. People seemed to be amused by it when they look at my frag tank.

I wouldnt scrape them off with a razor I would use a butter knife or screwdriver (sharp but not cutting sharp) enough to scrape the edge up. and peel it back. those are a pain to glue because they are so slimy. (wear gloves and saftey glasses those are protopalythoas and may contain palytoxins) dont worry if you tear it up a little, they are virtually impossible to peel without some damage, they are tough though and will recover quickly.

I like that picture! I was wondering the same as Peef. If you have a container you can put in the tank and place an empty shell in there with the little guy it might work.
I was really paranoid when I had my palys stuck to 4 different rocks. Had to get my neighbor to grab 2 of them and we took them all out together. If you do end up scrapping them off the shell, hold the shell above a container and squirt lots of water on the shell to remove any toxins before you put the little guy back in the tank.

I like the wedging him idea so he can't move and put another shell next to him to force him to a new home. Atleast it sounds like a good idea to me.

I bet the crab climbs out of the shell and unwedges his favorite shell before he'll switch the the new shell. they are picky little buggers when it comes to shell selection. I've seen them kill snails try the shell on after cleaning it out only to go back to their old shell because they didnt like the new shell. I have seen one of my hermits get wedged in the rock work unable to move and climb out of its shell, move its shell from the outside then climb back in and move on. let me know if this works for you. I'm betting 50/50 chance of success at best. I'm totally intrigued if this will work. PLEASE keep us updated if you try this.

I haven't wedged him yet. But I put in 3 good looking shells in there.

EXCUSE ME FOR JUMPING IN ON YOUR THREAD BUT IT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS NEEING INFORMATION ON. WHEN YOU SAY TO DRY OFF THE POLY AND THE ROCK, CAN YOU TAKE THE POLY OUT OF WATER LONG ENOUGH FOR THE GUE TO SET? AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO USE ONLY GEL SUPER GLUE. I HAVE JUST STARTED WITH A FEW AND ONE JUST WON'T STAY PUT. CAN YOU GIVE ME THE SAFE PROCESS?
AGAIN I'M SORRY FOR USING YOUR THREAD.

THANK YOU
