How do you rid of fireworms?

As you may have seen in other threads, I have 150lbs of live rock currently sitting in 2 large trash cans outside. I have found them to be littered with fireworms, and since I am eventually going reef, I dont think I want them. What is the norm for ridding of these?

do you have fire worms or are they bristle worms? some may argue but bristle worms are good they help the clean up crew. Thats what I have been told.

You can try mixing up a very salty batch of water, that should chase them out, I don't know exact salininty, but I would double dose the salt you would normally use, you don't need alot of water, just enough to put your rock in for a couple of minutes, maybe enough to shake it around with a gloved hand, it should shock them out, and all be at the bottom of your container. I did this a long time ago and it seemed to work. Didn't seem to hurt the rock itself, but chased some of the bad out. Coral Banded Shrimp will eat them also.

What if I mix up a bucket of supersalt saltwater and dip each rock into it before it goes into the tank? Will they come out? Would I be better off to do that or just put it all into the tank and then buy some damsels and a couple coral banded shrimp? How effective are they?

You can't ever get rid of all bristleworms, real fireworms aren't that common or that bad and bristles will keep your tank spotless. If they bug you, choose a reefsafe wrasse to pick off the smaller ones but honestly I wouldn't worry about bristleworms at all, just don't touch them.

I wouldn't want to get rid of all of them but if there are an excess amount use a new nylon stocking and put a piece of shrimp or other solid food inside. Let it sit in the buckets over night and pull them out first thing in the morning and they will be covered with worms. The worms get caught up in the nylon and can't get out.

That sounds like a good trick turning tim. Never thought of that one. I don't know that any damsels will eat them, I've really only seen Coral Banded Shrimp eat the bristle worms. Some wrasses supposedly eat them, but it is no guarantee that they will eat them or get rid of them all if that is what you want. If you were to use the salt, I would dip the rock individually, then put them back in the tubs to see if any more surface, then maybe repeat if you half to. You may not be able to get them all, and they are very beneficial for cleaning up decay and detritus, so you may want some. I have never really seen them cause any probs, except when you touch one by accident. Ouch!!! It is up to you.

If getting more than one CBS, make sure they are a mated pair. If not they probably will kill one another. One to a tank for the most part.
