Here are the directions for my overflow.
To start water flow in the siphon tube remove the siphon tube from the prefilter. Insert a length of airline tubing into the siphon tube about halfway or to thhe midpoint of the bend. Kwwp this airline in place and put the siphon tube backk into position in the prefilter box so both ends are now under water. NOTE:: The siphone tube goes in the small chamber of the outer box, NOT inside the standpipe. Now suck on the airline tubing drawing out the air and filling the siphon tube with water. Immediately remove the airline from the siphon tube. The water will begin to siphon out of the inner box into the outer box and will stop as soon as the water level in both inner and outer boxes are the same. From lifereef products.

I had trouble getting it started some time back...Put a smaller tube inside of your U-tube with it syphoning toward the overflow box. Suck on it until you get the water moving. Try to get the tube more than 50% into your u-tube. I find it is much easier to start the syphon by sucking the water toward the overflow, rather than trying to blow it. Am I making sense here?

Holy cow, all this sucking and blowing.
I guess I did the easy thing, went to a boat store and bought a marine pump. Old water out, new water in. TaDa. Not to mention, nothing goes in my mouth...especially nasty saltwater.

I just use a small tube like mentioned above. Insert it to the mid-point of the ben...and suck out the air. As the air is removed the syphon starts. Hardly ever get any water in my mouth. Big bonus using LifeReef overflows is they hardly ever loose syphon...only when I remove a overflow for cleaning purposes. the LifeReefs start back up on their own ... unlike some types available...
