I have the qt in the form of a 10 gal it has pvc a heater and filter and power head those water conditions are perfect and suitable for qt new fish ...I cant take the chance of buying a new tank 20 gallons nor do I have the room I have 7 tanks and putting in cycled water without risking a spike in params...the 10 is the qt for the new tang coming in going eventually into my 80...how long to qt him in there for i'm thinking 3 inches 2 weeks i was told by many this would work better than dumping him in the 80 gal with puffers and triggers...I value everyones opinions on these boards and would like to hear all of them. 20 gal is not an option at this point....so 10 gal qt for 2 weeks would that be better than not qt the tang ? and would you suggest qt for 10 days ? or a week. thanks,

SH2000, why don't you have your lfs hold the fish for you until the fish that are being treated for ich in your 55 are done with hypo. Then you will not have to worry about the new tang getting stressed. He will have plenty of room until he goes into your larger tank.
I have 1 LFS around me and they won't do it I dont trust them and thier fish always looks cramped and stressed I had them hold for me a spiney box puffer since I couldn'y QT it they called me todaya nd said he died...I dont trust them.

I plan on treating the tang with copper treatment while in the QT just in case he has a parasite and I belive it's benefical anyways ..anyone object if so why ?

what type of tang? many fish are pretty sensitive to copper. i would do hypo instead of the copper.

I agree. Do hyposalinity. Tangs can be treated with copper, but there is less margin of error. If you feel comfortable with copper treatment then you can, but copper can be toxic if you have evaporation and the copper level gets too high in the tank. You will have to watch the salinity level for hypo as well, but the fish won't die if you forget to check it for a day.

so if I do copper I should have a copper test handy ? This will be for a Purple Tang going into a 80 gal fowlr it's the only tang in there and there are only 4 other tankmates...the blue tang was not healthy and I got a super deal on a 3 inch PT...do you guys think with this fish copper would be recommended? please share thoughts. thanks.

If you go with copper get Cupramine. Beth suggested it some time ago for one of my fish and it worked well. I used it on a hippo tang who did very well with it and has been happy and growing in my DT now for several months.
Things I learned using the Cupramine:
1. It has a larger safety margin in dosing than other copper products.
2. It did not affect my biologic cycle...I was expecting having to do large water changes to keep the ammonia/nitrites/trates down..never had to.
3. Use the test kit designed for it, not just any brand of copper test kit.

I just realized I have Mardel copper anyone have experience with that ? if so let me know if it's anygood in the meantime I'll order the Cupramine and Seachem tester..But this was only going to be done as a precaution I plan on QT the new tang for 2-3 weeks and if any parasites are present I'll do HYPO anyone have any tidbits for purple tang QT ? Thanks.

Whoah, now you are working on a purple tang??? Didn't you just ask the other day in the reef section about a blue tang? You have several in hypo at the moment. Mardel makes copper safe. Do not treat the tang with that. Use hyposalinity if you get another tang.

yes I was certain on a blue tang went to the LFS and it looked terrible but found a great deal on a purple tang that was healthy i'm picking it up tomorrow..and starting QT I'll follow your advise and do HYPO...sounds like you don't belive me..I'll send you pics to your email of anything you'd like I wouldn't waste any1's time or mine on nonsense I value ll of your opinions and they weigh in on my decisons...so if there's anything your doubting let me know so i can clatify everything for you. Im getting weird vibes..all I did was follow your advise excluslevily it took me 12 hours to upgrade the 55 to 120 then 12 hours to break it down to hypo all my fish give me so credit...and like I said I have sevral tanks the purple tang is for my 3 year old 80 gal fowlr tank..has nothing to do wioth fish going through qt for ick or my other tanks.

I do give you credit for treating your fish. What I am confused about is what all is in your 80? They are all in the 55 now which is having ammonia spikes because you hastily set up the qt without letting it cycle, which I had told you to do first.
Now you were set on getting a blue hippo, yet you have one in the 55 being treated. That tang didn't look good, which makes me wonder what the rush was. Now you want a purple tang. Did you ever address the ich in the 80 gallon tank?

Ok thats were i think we got confused the powder brown did not have ick I thought it didn't i later learned it was just from the lights some stress...this is a qoute from beth on that thread "It looks more like skin discoloration rather than dots. More like stress. What are you water readings in your display tank?" anwyays there was and is no ich in the 80 gal in there are a few triggers a puffer,foxface, etc..anyways the powder brown passed after a while in my 10 since I didn't acclimate him properly and the levels were a bit off combined with the stress he passed...so just to clarify the 55 was upgraded to the 120 it was a lot of work so please undertand i sprnt hours on this...regarding the 55 I followed directions the ammonia i wouldnt say has spiked..and i did many many many water change sand as of now the params are ok I waited until the next day after to get all the fish in the 55 about 20 hours...and in that time did crazy water changes... i had a 1 inch bh tang being treated.. i wanted to get a 3 inch tang the only tang to go into the 80...when I went to the store the bh tang looked bad and the guy told me he can get me a sweet deal on a prurple tang so why not ? I can do a few things at once...I work on these tanks all night i barely sleep and i have insomnia so that gives me something to do...my arm is killing me now because i just got stung by my anemone and it looks bad...
hope were all on the same page...and the 80 isnt an aggresive tank its just not reef safe theres a niger trigger a huma huma a foxface and a clown...theres a small bioload and a PT whould surely be able to fend for himself as these fish over the years have become almsot docile...my bt triigger thats beaing traeted in my 55 is more aggressive and bites me..

Yeah, like sepulation said, there are a lot of people that do this all the time anyway. The volume of fish that my LFS gets, it always seems that ich is present, so with the last one I got from them went into hypo right away. I'm a little uneasy about it, but I'll likely do it with all new tangs I get too, just to be sure.

would hypo be a good idea to do right away after qt after 2 days or do it after a few days you need to remember the fish is stressed out sometimes if you order online and there is a snowstorm...in this case my lfs i just 1 hour away however theres a snow storm here and i drive slowly in these kind of roads. by the time i make it home it will surely be stressed out im not sure if hypo or copper would be a good idea

If you don't already have the fish, I think getting it right now might just be a bad idea, just wait until you get all your other issues cleared up and then try.
But to answer the question, if the fish was just delivered to your LFS, and now you're putting it in your own tank, yes you should wait to treat it with anything. Make sure it's eating and continues to eat for at least a few days. Then, if you choose to hypo right away, that's your call but if done right, you would certainly stop ich dead in it's tracks right there.
Also, there have been a few, more experienced, people on the boards that have said copper isn't good to use with tangs because their digestive system is more sensitive to it, so I'd just stick with hypo.

Yup, I've definitely thought about it, and I might do it with new tangs, it's just a lot of maintenance and I'm a single parent; time is a luxury (or sleep...can't remember which, I'm pretty tired today).
