How does this sound?

Well, I’ve decided to get a new sw aquarium. Going to hopefully improve on my reefing skills here (have a 75 reef @ home). This is what I have tentatively decided upon. Let me know what you guys think, especially prices and alternative means to the end result I’m looking for. A nice eye turner for a college/grad school (soon enough) student with dwindling time and even more so… money. Maybe I’ll switch my major to Marine Biology so I can call it research??
Basics:
50gal...not your standard 48", going for a 36" long extra wide with built in overflow~$170.00
Black stained oak cabinet/canopy, nice quality and very sturdy~$425
VHO retro system 2 10k 2 actinic ~243.90
I’ve decided I wanted something smaller (weight and probability of continuous annual movement from one apartment complex to the next), and something that looks sleek and yes…sexy lol. I’ve got to compete with 4 roommates and their various neon bar signs and beer paraphernalia.
Additional thoughts:
20-25 gal refugium...deep sand bed + live rock/calpura...or this ecosystem mud/calpura system (diy on the everything but the mud) I’ve been told it is rather hard to keep calpura from crashing during its reproductive cycle without 'essentail' elements from the mud. I’m a little leery of what this 'mud' can add though, considering all the trace elements added though other means. Anyone have experience?
Protein skimming? If you give me an extra 150
RO/DI i don’t even drink the water here....should I go ---- @ around $100-150?
Advice on a good return pump?
Going DSB and live rock in the main tank...how deep should I go with this...I was thinking 4-5 inches
Live rock.... want to buy some base rock and then order some smaller amount from Tampa Bay saltwater.... their rock looks pretty amazing, and I enjoy seeing crazy hitch hikers. Even if they are a pain ...anybody have experience or know prices for TBS?
Sorry for the length
any input on the pricing and general thoughts of 'the basics' as well as 'additional thoughts'?
Any and all input on anything would be much appreciated
:D
I know you guys have great opinions up the wazoo, and I would like to hear them all

Sounds like you have it pretty much covered, but why skimp on the lighting? I would go with at least 4 VHO, or throw a couple of MH in the mix. I like mag drive pumps, they are fairly cheap compared to other pumps, and I have never had a problem with one, I own 6 ;)

Alright, thanks for the tip on the Mag, i've heard a few other people send praise their way. On the vho, the 249 included 2 110wt 10K bulbs and two actinic....by four, do you mean 4 10k bulbs with two additional actinics? Can i fit that under my hood? I decided to skimp on MH because i've seen hard sps corals grown under vho close to the top, and i like the look....sort of your pinicle organisms @ the top. Do you think im limiting myself without MH?

My bad, I thought you were only running 2 bulbs total, in that case why not 6! Kidding, four will allow you to keep most LPS, softies, and polyps. No experience with the mud, Im for the refugium, but I have tons of caulerpa, and no mud, unless by mud you mean regular sand mixed with water givng it a muddy consistency ;) , In that case I have a couple hundred pounds of mud, but most of my caulerpa grows on the rock. HTH

Well, youre refugium set up seems like what i was origionally planning. I think i'll follow your advice rather then what seems like a nice money generating marketing gimmik. That mud is expensive anyway! Thanks for your help again. Cant say enough about this board. Anybody else have suggestions/advice? <img src="graemlins//freak.gif" border="0" alt="[freak]" />

oh yeah, and do you think there is any way i could have some sps corals under that lighting scheme? Possibly if I position them at the very top and give them treats when perform tricks for guests?
