How high is ammonia before you dose with meds besides doing a water change?

Ah, that's water condition.... not a med (just to clarify).
Depends on whether or not the fish are showing signs of stress. It's not a numbers thing.
And my test kit goes from .25 to 1.5.

Meds? I'm not sure I understand the question.

Sorry...I call any additive a medication.. (meds)
There are neutralizers people use to try and bring down ammonia...I have always just done a water change..never had ammonia over .25 but some have been advising that any ammonia should be treated...I don't know the name of the stuff but it messes with PH...which I thought was just adding to the problem.

My question is why are you getting ammonia? Overfeeding, too large a bioload, not enough rockwork for biofiltration bacteria etc. etc?

With all do respect to my good friend Henry, you dont need any rockwork for nitrification To be adequate

Not enough surface area in the tank, filters, sumps, etc. etc. to allow adequate nitrification bacteria population to exist for the amount of ammonia being produced??????
Better Joe?

OK...Here's the deal...the question is not cause Flower has ammonia...this is a question because of all the different answers received pertaining to ammonia...
I have always heard that ANY trace of ammonia is bad
Flower believes that ammonia over .50 is bad, and below that not to worry
SOOOO...she wants to get more information on what people think or know about ammonia levels....

If it shows up as 0.25, I'll change some water and retest. If it now negative, I'll retest in the morning. If the fish are gilling at 0.25 or are acting a little skiddish... I'll change water and add Ultimate.
The next value on my test kit is 1.5. So if it's above 0.25 I am definitely adding a conditioner or removing the fish altogether.
  • Change water only = 0.25 with asymptomatic fish.
  • Change water and add conditioner = 0.25 with symptomatic fish.
Change water, add water conditioner and possibly remove fish = next colour up (1.5 on my test kit).
(of course doing other things like looking for a source, but I don't think that's the data you're after, Flower).

Exactly!! Your great Meowzer...I just logged on...busy day...looks like .25 and over ...it is 100% so far, not a single different answer. I did have..(6 months ago at least) an ammonia spike of .25 I was so upset.
I was told at that time .25 was like nothing to stop freaking out...I had done 4 major water changes (30%) in 4 days trying to fix the problem. Now this was when I was lugging water in 5g jugs to the house from wal-mart for my 90g. I was exhausted.
I had never even heard of dosing the tank with anything to fix ammonia...But folks on the site were. Then it seemed that they had trouble with PH levels, which seemed worse than the .25 ammonia spike they were concerned about.
I wanted something we could reference concerning when to dose and when not to worry, just do a water change. So that is the story behind my little poll.
Cranberry...You are so precise...your answer is exactly what we all needed. Now we have a guide line to follow..and I learned how to take an opinion poll
