depends on how well you take care of it. it could last as long as you want it to last. theres people on here that have had a single tank set up for 25-30 years or more on this site! do your research read read read and dont listen to your lfs (local fish store) if you have questions ask the people on this site there are also a lot of very experienced people that will offer help here. i pretty much learned all i know by reading on this site and asking plenty of questions!

+1, plus I'd say that a tanks life usually outlast the interest of the hobbyist because they do not research or take their time. I'm not by any means saying this is your scenario just that your tanks life shouldn't be a major concern ( unless your buying a used or abused tank that is)

All glass or acrylic? Personally I think they made tanks better back in the day. New does not always mean trust worthy. Keep an eye for bowing, broken center braces and leaks every day. If I see any stress I replace the tank and don't take chances. I prefer all glass aquariums and the only leak I ever had in 30 years was a 55g I had for just a couple of years.
A proper stand that truly supports the tank..Make sure everything is level..Never ever move the tank with anything in it...be careful with your rocks and place them were you want them and "lock" them into place, don't let them just drop or fall. All these things play a role in the life of the tank.
