How long should I keep my phosphate sponge in my filter?

I'm trying to lower phosphates and nitrates in my tank. I have Kent Phosphate Sponge in a bag in my filter. How long should I keep it there? I heard that it should be in there for 8 hours and then replace it. Is this correct?
I've already done a large water change. I currently have only a few hermits in the tank since my porcupine puffer and niger trigger died when my power was off for 2 days. Any other helpful methods to lower nitrates?

there should be instructions on the container. i keep mine in for about a week, then replace it if i run into phosfate problems.

I believe the kent brand says to not leave it in for more than 48 hrs not sure though. I recomend rowaphos because you don't have to worry about the phosphates leaching back in.
