How long does it take for plain rocks to become live rocks when placed in a tank with normal live rocks?
Someone said several months but was kind of vague.

Ah but if my lighting sucks and dont have alot of additives? Cant afford them.
Only have iodine and coralvite atm. My purple algae is growing well, but what im wondering is how long to make them as effective as fully live rock? 2 weeks isnt enough for that is it?

Just an FYI, i wouldnt add iodine unless you have a test for it. not much is needed. your salt with replenish any that is used. To much can be fatal
base rock will start to have growth on it as far as coraline or green algae pretty quickly depending on your system. For it to be fully covered with bacteria and be live in the sence that we buy it for takes anywhere from 3-6 months. The amount of growth you have depends entirely on your system.

i will give u a hint without givin to much info out there are 3 main additives that u want to make it grow like crazy and yes it will take a month at the max to have it fully covered it will be a good payoff so i would go get the additives good investment

So what are the 3? And what is the minimum to add if your low on funds?

just make sure you are not over adding anything. Go out and get the testers for Ca and such. It is very likely, depending on the salt you are using, that you already have everything you need. In which case, you will throw off your system.
for example, by having Ca that is too high, it will most likely lower your ALK, makeing shifts in your pH common and larger. This is never a good thing, esspecialy to delicate inverts and corals.

just wanted to say.. jjst cuzz a rock is coverd w/ coraline algea dont mean it is a actual live rock.. ( think of a powerhead... they get coverd... but is the pump live??) anyhow.. imo .. it would take a good 5 months to turn them into alive rock.. thats if it's ina a stable and established tank..
