How long with Diatoms?

Hi Guys,
I completely changed my substrate 2 weeks ago or so, and expectedly, have got some diatom algae. How long should I expect this to last?
Thanks!
Tim.

It'll vary from system to system...but normally not very long . I've never had to deal with diatoms longer than a month or so...

ok thanks!
I am wondering, I replaced my Actinic bulbs a few days ago (T5, were a year old) but my whites are still a year old. So we have a number of possible causes for the diatoms! Could be a) new substrate b) new actinics c) old whites that need replacing!
Ive tested PO4 and that is zero.
Any thoughts on what is the most likely?
Thanks!
Tim. :help:

more likely silicates? hmmm ok, would it be an idea to get some more Kent PO4/SiO3 remover? i chucked the old one out as it had been in there a long time, and throughout the flatworm exit treatment....
Cheers Kip (btw new lighting is awesome and I realised when I had the new lights how bad the old ones were....and im building a new canopy for them - well my dad is anyway!)
Tim.
