How man hermits and snails?

That depends on your tank and what you want. Just as my opinion I would add 50 snails to start and maybe 30 scarlet reef hermits. Some people want nothing to do with hermits, but the scarlets seem to be much less aggressive than blue leg hermits which will spend their day killing snails and each other. Hermits kill each other and snails in the wild as well as in tanks, so believe it is natural and will occur. If you put shells on the bottom for them they will still do it, if you make sure they eat well they will outgrow their shells and kill for new ones, but if you don't feed them well they will kill for food. They are omnivorous and do not just eat plants. I have had much better luck with the scarlets, just stay away from blue legs.

First of all KPD, WELCOME to the board!!! You will find a lot of good information here for your tank.
I disagree slightly with C M on this one.... you should get about 68 snails to start out for your tank. The general rule is that you have one snail for every two gallons.
135 gallon = 68 snails
Also, I think you should get about 20-25 blue leg hermits, and 20-25 red leg hermits. C M said that blue legs like to eat snails.....well majority of crabs will eat snails if they are hungry, need a bigger shell, and if the snail is weak. It isn't just blue legs that do this. C Marlowe has made it seem as if that is all blue leg hermits do their whole entire day is eating snails and each other. NOT TRUE!! Like I stated before...they DO eat snails and each other but this is a part of the cycle of nature. They aren't going to munch every single snail or crab in your tank. You really don't have that much to worry about.
HTH and good luck with your tank. Feel free to ask anything!!! :D

Hey,
Very general rule of thumb is one hermit or crab per gallon. I wont get into the good hermit/bad hermit debate, but if you have 135 gals, you should have about 135 total scavengers.
Take care,
Dan'l :D

I got 10 blue legs a couple of months ago and watch them fight alot. However I have only lost one due to the fights.
I have never seen them bother my snails or anything else in the tank.
All depends on the luck of the draw I guess.
