The "Inches-per-gallon" rule isn't at all accurate. In my opinion, this shouldn't be used to find out how many fish could be added to an aquarium of X gallons.
What you should look into is how large the fish will get fully grown. Will that size be too large for your tank? How much water volume does this fish need? Are these fish vigorous swimmers? Will this fish be fine in my tank in a year? Five years?
To get a much more accurate answer, you should list all the fish you plan to keep in your tank. From there, we can slowely narrow down your choices to a few fish which will do great in your tank.
Remember to always think for the longrun when it comes to keeping the fish. Often times aquarists will buy a fish and expect the fish to stay the same size that they bought it at, or, they will buy a fish when paying no attention to what size this fish will get in a year. Many times too often these fish will outgrow the aquariums in less than 17 months. Make sure you always know how large the fish will get fully grown.
Also, your "extra gallons" of water do not many any difference when deciding what fish you're going to get. The fish are always going to be in the 72 gallon tank. What's 30 gallons of extra water when these fish cannot swim in the extra gallons? Always guide your selection towards the 72 gallon tank.
Take Care,
Graham

I'd say you need to decide small large or both.THINK OF ADULTS SIZE, NOT JUVI SIZE. So if u wanna go small, 8-10 fish maximum.
If large, get only one IMO. A tang may be pushing it, i wouldn't reccomend one. But a gold-striped maroon clown and/or coral beauty with a few(3, max.) green chromis and a bottom dwelling fish(ex. blenny) would look good IMO.
Remember that these fish have infinite space to avoid each other in the wild, but in your tank, they have only about 1/99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999
of what they have in the wild, most likely even less than that
