It is a shame you did not ask this question before you got your lionfish. If your lionfish is a dwarf (we hope) then your tank is a squeeze for him when he is full grown ( 5 or 6 inches). He will eat fish smaller than himself, and you don't really have the room to get another fish that will match the lion in size. Also, unfortunately, lionfish are fairly high polluters.
I'm thinking you may have backed yourself into a corner with your choice of that first fish.

You can add as many fish as you like........though that might be a bad idea.
General rule: freshwater 1" per gallon, saltwater 1" per 3-5 gallon. This depends on the species of course. Aggressive, carniverous fish should be on the higher end of the scale.

Welcome to the boards!
What kind of Lion did you purchase?
Also, what kind of filtration, skimmer, rock, etc. do you have? All of those play a significant role in deciding how many fish you can have.

You'll have to get rid of the violitan in a year or 2, IMO take it back to the LFS and get a smaller less aggressive fish (clowns, gobies, blennys, dwarf angels. etc.)

The tank is probably going to be way to small for the lion when he gets bigger. Any fish you add that he can get in his mouth he will eat.

Its not probley, it WILL be too small for it when its bigger, they get like 15+ inches, thats probley taller than the tank itself
