How many power heads do I need

That's really going to depend on the gallons per hour rating of individual powerheads and what other means you have of creating flow in the tank. I would suggest at least two, perhaps Maxijet 1200s, one at each end of the tank.

depends on what type of powerheads as well. If you are using propeller types (seio, tunze, hydor koralia, vortech) you will only need one or two depending on size, model and demensions of the tank. If you are using conventional powerheads and want to keep anything.....well lets just say I have a 100g with 2-270gph in the corners, 2-370gph midway between the corners and center and in the center 1-480gph firing one way and 1-600gph firing the other way....that works very well for me but one day I may replace them all with 2 propeller style pumps to save a little on electricity, improved flow patterns (so I hear) and to cut back heat+space in the tank. keep in mind all my pumps together probably cost the same as one Tunze and alot less than one vortech and I'm in no rush to fix what aint broke.

There is a big difference between the maxi 1200 and koralia. First the maxi jet is just direct and it pumps about 300 gph if I remember correctly. Now depending on which koralia you get buy, it can pump from 400-1200 gph and at a lower energy consumption and the flow is disperse.
So basically in a 100 gallon tank you can have 2 koralia 3 and move 1700 gph which is pretty good in my opinion.
I have 2 in my tank which replaced 5 maxi jets and my only regrets is that I did not find them sooner. The only setback is that they do not recommend using a wavemaker with them at this time.

I would go with 2. I have 1 820 seio and 1 620 seio. I'm not sure why I have 2 different sizes but I would go with 2 820's. I think mine are kind of big but those koralia are HUGE.

I have two hydor koralia #3s in a 75 gal...I love them...they took the place of 3 powerheads before and more than doubled the flow..way better! As for size?..well...like I said..I had three PH before taking up space and now only two...so seems to me that's about the same space and almost 3 times the flow. Here's a pic to show what they are like..
