how many powerheads

hi, I'm new at this I just figured out how to write this, my kids tell me I'm computor illiterate. I had no idea what a thread or post was but am learning.I've been reading all this stuff for about a month or more and have learned alot but not enough still reading. This is a great site. I have a 90 gal. reef would 2 powerheads ok? I've been looking on ---- and found a couple these are the choices aqua clear 802(85-155gph),aqua clear 3000(150-260gph), a.c.4000(237-396gph). I know this is probablly on here somewhere but I can't find it and need to get a powerhead. thanks. If I,m not doing this right just let me know

i have a 100 gal tank. i use three powerheads, one on each side, and one in the middle. the a.c. 4000 is moves a goos amount of volume. i would vary the gph on the three powerheads. this will give you different currents in the tank. good luck, and ask all the questions you want here.

I have a 90 gallon reef with 2 maxijet 1200s. I did have 4 in it but when I moved the tank, I only added 2 back for now. It appears to be doing just as well as when I ran 4 so I am leaving like that for now. I also have the Mag7 returning from the sump.

Glad to see you interested in the site as well as computers. I went through the same learning curve that you are about 4 years ago. Now I could'nt function without my pc and the web. Good luck!

Welcome to the board, its about time you joined ;)
The question about the powerheads seems to be answered with the Maxi jet 900's, they use less power and have less force than the 1200's, but its a large wattage difference and not that much gph loss.
However. If you have week filtration on your tank. no wet/dry, now sump, or very little in the way of mechanical filtration then you might want to go with on of the powerheads that offer a small filter that goes onto it.
All depends on your set up, but the bang for the buck as they say is with the Maxi Jets, great powerhead, very little trouble.

I say go with the 900's, less wattage and seem to run cooler. You only loose 65 GPH also.
Thomas: who is it now?:;)

I run six pumps rated at about 2700 GPH combined in my 90 gallon reef......two small powerheads would not be enough IMO. Algae growth seems to love slow tanks. Never used aqua clear, so I can't comment on those. One pump will give you a toilet bowl effect obviously, and two just give two toilet bowls going on each side.....I prefer more powerheads colliding all over and giving "somewhat" of random flow....that way corals and such aren't bent the same way all the time, and detritus doesn't collect as easily. Best of luck, and welcome aboard.
