i got a skunk (scarlet lady, cleaner) shrimp the other day. I love it. Curious...
what other kind of shrimp can i have? How many can i add into my 29 gal tank. I have a peppermint shrimp also.. never see him.
Can i add a coral banded shrimp in there? They look awsome and their cheap. But i hear they can be aggressive.
How many shrimp do you safley house?

You will rarely ever see the pepermints come out during the day. I've had mine for over six months and thought he'd died after not seeing him for 6 weeks. While checking on my tank at night with a flashlight I caught a glimpse of him before he ran off. I'm not sure there is a limit to the amount of shrimp you have in a 29 gallon but common sense dictates there would be territorial conflicts and predatory actions that would bring them down to reasonable numbers. I have two in my 29 gallon but with the amount of lr I believe there would be enough hiding spots for atleast 4-5. If it were up to me I'd get a pair of mated cleaners and a couple of pepermints to scavenge the floor. You'd be safe with those numbers. I wouldn't get a cb. They can be nasty sometimes and quite possibly will kill off your other shrimp. I've heard it happen here plenty of times. Stick with the skunk cleaner or maybe a blood red shrimp(though they hide). Skunks are very friendly and will eat from your hands.

both of my scarlet cleaners, (skunk shrimps) stay out all day. check everything out. They are awsome. I love them. I put my hand in the tank, they attack it! They start picking at my hands! They began this immediatly after dropping in the tank.

Though for the most part pepermints are nocturnal and evasive the one I have used to eat right out of my hands just like my cleaner. Unfortunately I added a small hawkfish and ever since they both hide out 24/7. I have to reach in to its' cave in order to hand feed him. If you've been missing your shrimps for a while and are not sure if they are alive sneak up to the tank with a flashlight at night and you will most likely find them.

nolofinwe,
My scarlet took a couple days to come out of his 'cave' too. Now he comes to the glass when I walk up to the tank. He starts wiggling his antena begging me to put my hand in the tank. Sometimes I joke with my wife that I must have millions of parasites and such on my hands.

I have 3 peppermints in a 29g w/ lots of LR, and they are always out scavenging, and when it comes to feeding time, they are the first to the food; besides my perc.

Whenever I feed my peppermints and CBS come flying out of their hiding spots and start grabbing whatever makes it to the bottom. It is funny because they are so possesed they just walk right over or through corals etc to get to the food.

I have 2-301 aqua clear pointed in the opposite direction and 1-201 pointed towards the surface. This in addition to my skimmer and 2 penguin trickle(only used for circulation) gives the tank great movement.

OK I know this thread started out being about how many shrimps can I have...BUT...JEEZE PEOPS...ONLY time hands should ever be put into the tank is for tank maintenance...I know 1 person says he jokes w/ his wife about what ends up on his hand/arm FROM the tank, BUT more likely I'd be asking what am I PUTTING into the tank from MY hand/arm...
to me that would be a harmful act or just the possibilty of doing so unintentially but possibly doing harm to tank critters would be enough to keep me from wanting to put my hands in the tank as little as possible...just my $0.02 though :)
now back on topic....pep. shrmps actually sometimes may act a cleaner shrimp...however, some tank mates may see them more as food than for service...if you put enough of them in a tank, they should spawn in which case you get free renewable food source for your tank...I don't think I would ever want a CBS in my reef tank; seems to be a hit/miss critter that where there has been enough instances cited where they turn outto be aggressive toward each other & other species
