i've had 6 mid sized Pep shrimp and a large CBS in my 29g for about 2 yrs now and while they constantly spawn the larva are consumed by the fish or get damaged by the powerheads before they reach full 'shrimp' like critters (they go through many molts before they look anything like a shrimp)
in my 180g i have 25 pep and 2 scarlet cleaners that spawn constantly and out of the many million or so larva they release every week only a very few have made it to the shrimp stage. the tank has 450 lbs of Fiji LR for them to find shelter in as well as a ton of Xenis (they really like hiding in it for some reason) but my 5 yrs old pair of mandarins keep them in check :)

well the male has only been with me for about 3 yrs now, the female for 5. they were in seperate tanks for a while but when i set up the 180 i put them in together in hopes they'd pair off and they have and spawn regularly. i'll dig up a pic and post it later. i have them uploaded to my gallery over on -- but after diasgreeing with a Moderator i got a temp ban so i cant access them to download. if you have an account there the screen name is dragon_slayer.

so how many baby shrimp out of the millions have lived to molt to a "real" shrimp....

3 that i can tell. with so much rockwork in the tank there may be more. but the ratio of larva that make it are slim to none.

kc, have you been able to raise any of the fry to adults?
to be honest I have never tried. they do all the courting with lights on but the actual spawn with egg/sperm release is about an hour after lights out and a moon light is the only way you can watch (makes it hell for taking a pic too) the eggs have to remain in the water and not touch anything or it damages the eggs and they will not hatch. that sorta limits the collection of them as well as moving them to a holding/rearing tank.
there is a place in Florida somewhere (cant recall the name of the outfit) that has taken on the challenge and been successful, but the cost of doing so makes the fish more then 10x the price of wild caught.
is that the female on the right? is she fat with eggs?

yes, yes. but even after the spawn the two of them have quiet the beer bellies. the male when perched on a rock is about 1/4" up off it on his belly alone.
how can u --- mandarins?

the male's forward dorsal fins forward most part is elongated considerably. it's not noticeable on my male in the pics due to the very aggressive courtship behavior of these fish. after the courtship the day before the actual spawn the male will bite the female on her mouth and drag her about the tank. he keeps his elongated fin wore off during these times as well as he's tore the lower lip off the female once a while back.
I used to disturb them and make him let go but that delays the spawn and the female can die if she gets to gavid with eggs so you have to let nature take it's course. I've talked with others who's target mandarins do not get as aggressive, but everyone with the psychedelics have the same aggressiveness.
