[list type=decimal][*]I read everything I could, asked a ton of questions, and THEN I got a tank and slowly filled it with livestock (I also purchased a quarintine tank!)
What the heck is the right way?

This was meant to be a poll.. but I obviously didnt do that correctly :)
I'll be the first to say that I had NO idea how 'into' a saltwater tank you actually have to get.. also I had no idea how much $$ it would take. Or how much stress it would bring into my life.... or how much joy! :) Nobody told me that you should really read up about saltwater FIRST.... of course the LFS people neglect to tell you that. As long as you spend a few grand there they can go home happy.
Since I purchased my tank I have read more in that short time than in my whole life I believe :) I also find the hobby extremely enjoyable and hope to continue learning more and more and one day possibly make a career out of keeping fish! :help:

i aquired my tank when i bought my house 2 years ago....
the owners didnt wanna move it since it was a pain to move 100G glass tank with built on stand and canopy....
um the tank only had 3 fish in it then and looked like it hadnt been cleaned in months u could barely see in the tank at that time....
took me some time and money.... actually lots of time and money to get to where i am now.... also a lot of learning and some bad errors...
wish i woulda had the internet when i first started would made it alot easier i bet....

My first tank was a 90 gallon. The guy at the lfs set it up for me with everything I needed.
It had an undergravel filter, no sump, no protien skimmer. The decore was dead coral skeletons.
Had a list of fish that I liked so they all just went into the tank after a short cycle.
No consideration for compatability, just looked cool. After some considerable money wasted and no success I found a decent store and learned how to do things the right way.
Just lived and learned things the hard way. I am still amazed at the experts advice I got from a large, successful fish store. They obviously didn't get my business any more.

I didnt research at all before I setup my tank, or consider how much it would $$$. I had had freshwater aquariums for along time. I thought saltwater was perty much the same. But it wasnt. My LFS helped me out some but this website is the best! I wish I would've none about it before I setup my tank. I would have saved alot of money and fish. So now I'm learning all the things I should've none before I setup a saltwater tank. And I hope to evenually have the reef aquarium I've always dreamed of.
