We are setting up a 155 gallon bowfront, 72X25X25. How many tangs could we put in this tank? We LOVE tangs!!! :cheer:

Well, my mom's boss at her work has an AWESOME 155 bowfront tank with 4 tangs. A blue, a purple, a naso, and a yellow. Plus a bazillion other fish. Hope this helps!!

IMO.. two would be max. You could do three if one was the smaller variety like a Kole. Always keep in mind that these animals get big and three adult large size tangs in a 155 will be cramped and could lead to aggression and disease.
You'll have others that will say I have 5 or 6...but it is not good in the long-term. No aboslutes.....but certanly you can increase odds for success. Always know the adult size of fish and make sure your system can house all the inhabitants to adulthood.
Also, these animals are territorial and they require lots of swimming space. When you factor in tank decor/live rock that space quickly gets filled.

There are a bunch of different kinds of tangs, some need a larger tank than others. Which ones do you like?? And we can help with how many you should get.
For example, you still don't have enough room for a spotted or bluespine unicornfish, but yellows you can get several.

And another thing... Are you gonna go reef?? Cause then you'd want less fish working on your bioload. You have 6 feet of tank, so most any tang will be happy, but your "inches of fish per gallon" rule changes depending on the rest of your set up.
Filtration, which kind, sump size, reef tank, FOWLR or FO...all that stuff needs to be taken into consideration.

We are going reef, with a 40 gallon sump. We have a Rena XP3 Cannister filtration system and a Coralife Super Skimmer 125. Also 3 powerjets. Our aquarium also has 2 pre-drilled overflows. :jumping:
We now have a Yellow Belly Regal Tang and want to add a Yellow Tang, Powder Blue, Naso and a Sailfin. This is our Wish list! We realize that maybe we can't have them all!

So we'll say you have an accumulated 170 gallons of water. If you are going reef and will eventually have an adaquate amount of live rock (1.5 to 2 lbs per pound) and since tangs aren't the dirtiest fish, infact they are an advantage... Taking your other fish into consideration also, I would, and keep in mind that I said "I would" attempt around 28 inches of fish total. That's measured by the length they will get, not what they are now...
You now have a regal so that's 12 inches.
a yellow would be 7, a powder blue 9, a sailfin 15 and a naso (which I think are so cool) will get to 18 inches.
Don't forget to add your other fish into this equation.
Oh, this is about 6 inches per gallon, because that's the concern here... What your bioload will be able to handle.
If you want to attmept 4 inches per gallon then you'd get a few more inches, but I would (<---pointing out again, this is only my opinion
) not attempt any more than that, just to stay safe.

So are you saying that if we add the Naso that would be all we could have, because thats more than 28 inches?
:notsure:

Agree about 175g of actual water. If you use 5 inches per gallon, you can go with about 35 inches of adult size fish. My count is YT=6in, PB=8 in., hippo=12, and then add some other varieties of fish to get to 35 inches. perhaps a flame angel, a royal gramma and a couple of percs w/b fine. that w/b a total of 38 inches of adult size fish whixh in my humble opinion w/b fine. My opinion of course. Good luck as this is the fun part odf the hobby.
Also go slow and add the tangs last (suggest, hippo, and then PB and Yt...2 weeks apart except maybe add the YT and PB together depending on their size difference.

Yeah, looks to be like that. But me...again, ME...I'd prolly cheat a little. Just a little. But keep a good eye on your nitrates and ammonia levels. If you get them, you need to back down the number of fish...

yes and no about water volume in a reef enviroment you LR is going to take up an accessive amount of space make water volume less.tangs are highly active fish and territorial.can also be aggressive to like species.some do well in groups of 3 or such as the yellow tang.scopus tang is highly agressive towards any fish that has remotly the same shape.aslo as the sail fin.just do some research to see what compatible with your plans then build from there.
