How many watts of metal halide needed on a 40g long?

I have a 40 gallon long tank that has t5 lighting on it now. I am wanting to switch it over to halides because lets face it without the halides you really can't grow anything super cool. I am going to probably build my own cover and buy the lights and balast separate (it is cheaper that way.) I need to know an approximate wattage needed for a tank this size. And also if you have any design ideas for a hood don't be scared to let me know. :notsure:

roughly 36x18x13?? id probably go with 20,000K 2x175 MH with two of your T-5's 2x24 actinics...that should give you about 7.45 watts per gallon, and give you ability to keep quite a bit of what you may want...
