i have a 72 gal bowfront i set it up friday. i have 60 pounds of LS and about 10 pounds of LR i bought what the LFS had.
ph 8.0
salinity 1.025
ammonia 1.0
nitrite 0ppm
nitrate 20
i have a 1000 canister filter. i put in bacteria when i first set it up. nothing in the tank but the LS and LR.

There is no way of telling... your cycle is complete when you have no more ammonia and no more nitrites for a few consecutive days. Everyones tank is different and you cant put a time limit on it. The range can be anywhere from a week to a month or longer.

Yep... if you are planning on more LR you need to becarful how much you add at one time once your cycle is complete. And especially if you add any live stock to the tank before all your LR Is in there. A couple of pieces at a time may not be bad but anything significant would most likley start your cycle again and would potentially hurt anything living in your tank. I just thought I would mention this as I see you dont have much LR at all.

Tuff to say with a 72 gal, maybe 15 to 20 lbs at a time but you need to let cure once its in there, let the bacteria build up on it before you add any more. Test your water frequently to make sure you dont get an ammonia spike. The trouble with LR Is you cant tell how much die off your going to get, so if you have a small piece with a ton of debris on it your die off could be significant and that could start another cycle.

i know this site has 20-25 pounds of fiji rock for 119. is that a good deal or should i look around for something better.

It all depends on weather or not you want a reef tank or a FO or FOWLR tank.

No those are good prices... IMO. But I havent purchased LR in a long time. Maybe someone else will be able to have more input here.

Well then none of the above you want a Reef... LOL Typically you want 1-1/2 to 2 lbs of LR per gallon. So your target is anywhere from 110 to 150 lbs of LR in your tank for a reef. This gives you surface area for your corals to grow on, bacteria to grow on to aid in filtering your tank and ample hiding places and grazing places for fish to have. Also depending on which species of anemone you get for it to foot onto and be happy.
